FIRST ACCUSED IN ABU GHRAIB ABUSE
SENTENCED TO ONE YEAR

The American martial court in
Baghdad has sentenced Spc. Jeremy C. Sivit to a maximum penalty of one
year in prison, reduction in rank for his role in the Abu Ghraib prisoner
abuse case.Judge Col. James Pohl has postponed looking in the issues of three other
soldiers accused in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse to July 21.Hearing was
held under strict security measures. President of the Governing Council
Ghazi Aziz Al-Yawer, GC member Dara Nourilldin, Ministers of Interior and
Human Rights attended the hearing.During the 8-year hearing, Sivits said
"I'd like to apologize to the Iraqi people and those detainees".
GC TO MOVE OUT OF THE GREEN ZONE

The Governing Council has demanded that it be responsible for providing
necessary security protection for its members away from the coalition
authority.GC rotating member Sami al-Askari has said that the security
measures may include moving the GC headquarters out of the green zone,
adding that in its latest session the GC discussed a suggestion by a
number of its members that the GC headquarters be moved out of the green
zone. On another hand, GC member lawyer Ahmed al-Barrak has said that the
GC discussed with the coalition authority the strict security measures to
be taken to protect GC members and officials of the coming government.In a
statement to As-Sabah daily, al-Barrak said that the GC demanded the
importance of a complete transfer of authority without reservation to any
of the dossiers whatever sensitive be they.During the meeting, GC members
demanded that a delegation from GC members should attend UN meetings
concerning a new resolution on Iraq.

Ministry of Higher Education has said that
Morocco, Bulgaria, France, and America
offered 103 scholarships for Iraqi MA and PHD students.Director of the Cultural Relations Department at the Ministry has said
that Morocco offered five MA
scholarships and five for PH.D. while Bulgaria has offered five MA and 15
PHD. France, he said offered 100 PHD scholarships and research studies.
American Fulbright Association has offered 40.The director said
that Iraq is looking forward to obtain more scholarships form world
universities to help improve the efficiency of Iraqi students and
researchers.
CIA TO CUT SUPPORT FOR IRAQI PARTIES

Haider al-Musawi, spokesman of Dr. Ahmed al-Chalabi, head of National
Congress party told As-Sabah that the party's cooperation programme with
the Pentagon might suspended next June. Al-Musawi described the Congress
party as a national alliance participating in the search for Iraq's WMD in
cooperation with the Pentagon, calling upon the CIA to cut all kinds of
cooperation with the Iraqi parties in preparation for the establishment of
a democratic free Iraq.

The Iraqi-American Chamber of Commerce and industry conference was held in
Baghdad on May 17 with the
attendance of representatives of Iraqi ministries and more than 100
companies.Usama Fu'ad, DG of development and improvement at the Chamber said that
most of those attended the conference expressed desire to attend Diyar
Bakr fair due to be held in Turkey
on May 25-27. All ministries are to have free wings at the said fair
except oil ministry due to have two wings. More than 150 Iraqi, Arab and
foreign companies are to attend the fair, except ministries of
electricity, trade, justice and finance, affirming that this fair would
not be an alternative for the one expected to be held in Baghdad
international fair HQ.

Wajeeh al-Mus'ab, information advisor at the communications and post
dept. said that a sabotage act led to cut the cable linking northern
provinces with Baghdad, which resulted in cutting communications between
Baghdad and Tikrit, Samara, Mosul and most Kurdistan region provinces.

Dr. Mohammed Bahr al-Uloom, the minister of oil said that the ministry is
to provide the fact-finding UN panel, created by the UN secretary-general
with all related data The minister said that what media reported recently
were inaccurate, adding that the economic committee under the
former regime and along the 13 phases of the oil-for-food deal consisted
of five persons under direct supervision of the former president. This
committee granted allocations for each stage with no monthly
allocations.Bahr al-Uloom said that the ministry would not declare the
details concerning the names, contracts and quantities as these facts must
be kept secret and investigated by unilateral parties.The minister
asserted that the former regime has wasted the Iraqi people's riches, so
if it is possible to regain some of them. It would be an essential task
but it must give some time for honest investigation.Al-Uloom has met the
UN fact-finding mission last week.
CRIMINAL INTELLIGENCE AFFAIRS AGENCY

Cadres of the Criminal intelligence affairs agency at the ministry of the
interior started collecting data on criminals and terrorists.Attending the
BAC session, Hassan al-Ubeidi, the ministry's undersecretary said that
the agency consists of officers distributed all over Baghdad districts.He
added that greatest crimes department is one of the ministry's formations
that shoulder the responsibility of the former 'crime combating dept' in
addition to another dept. specialized in kidnapping cases.

Mr. Waleed Hatum, the director of the Water Projects in Baghdad, said
during attending the session of the regional council of Baghdad that
Bechtel has prepared a study to implement 5 service projects in Iraq,
which are expected to be implemented in December. He added that the study
includes achieving many projects like getting rid of garbage in Khan Bani
Saad. Also the plan includes implementing about 200-300 drinking water
projects in rural areas that have more than 5000 people, and Sadr City
water project, and three other projects to provide water to arable lands
south of Baghdad. "As soon as the USAID approves the project, we will
start work in these projects" Mr. Hatum said. Mr. Abdul Hussein Al-Hakim,
the representative of Agriculture Ministry gave a brief idea about the
activities of the ministry in the current situation and its hard work to
progress by means of providing the necessary equipment to farmers to have
best kind of crops. He added that the ministry now is unable to fight
insects because they don't have the helicopters needed for this purpose
and that the ministry is waiting the money of the donors.
IRANIAN AID FOR IRAQI RED CRESCENT

The Iraqi Red Crescent has recently received 3 Iranian trucks loaded with
medicine from the Iranian Red Crescent as a gift people in Kerbala and
Najaf cities. Mr. Faris Hamid Abdul Karim, the secretary general of the
society said that the shipment of medicine was divided into 20 shares, 5
shares of them were sent to Karbala Health Department and a same share to
Najaf Health Department, some others to primary health clinics, whereas
the left quantity of medicine will be stored and distributed to health
centers in need of it. Also, the society is working on contacting the
international societies to provide help.

A 4-member gang was able yesterday to assassinate Mr. Kareem, who works at
the General Inspector Department at the Ministry of Interior. Eyewitnesses
said that the victim was getting out of his house when 4 unknown men fired
towards him, he tried to defend himself, but of them shot him several
bullets ended his life and run away. The assassinated guy was following up
a case of corruption at the ministry that some top officials may be
involved in.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY ORGANIZES CULTURAL
SYMPOSIUM

The Historical Society is due to organize a cultural symposium depicting
culture and the history of Iraq. Dr. Jamil Mousa Al-Najar, the secretary
general of the society said that the lecture will depict the importance of
history and the role of historians in the intellectual movement and the
human history. It will focus on the future of Iraq supported by examples
from history and laws issued by the historians and philosophers many
decades ago.
The society
started work after making the elections last month that came out with
choosing Dr. Hussein as its secretary general. |
